How PIP points work

How many points do you need?

The two parts are scored separately. In the daily living activities, 8 to 11 points gets the standard rate and 12 or more the enhanced rate. Mobility works the same way. You can get one part, both, or neither, and points from one part never count towards the other.

Can I add two lines from the same activity?

No. In each activity only one line counts: the highest-scoring one that applies to you. If two lines apply on different days, the DWP takes the one that applies on more than half of days; if two lines each apply on more than half of days, the higher-scoring one. If no single line does but two together cover more than half, it takes the one that applies on the most days.

What does "reliably" mean?

You only count as able to do something if you can do it safely, to an acceptable standard, as often as you reasonably need to, and in a reasonable time, which is no more than twice as long as someone without your condition would take. If you can manage it once but are then exhausted or in pain, you can't do it reliably.

How much is PIP in 2026/27?

A week: daily living £76.70 standard or £114.60 enhanced; mobility £30.30 standard or £80.00 enhanced. It is paid every four weeks.

Is PIP changing?

The scoring on this page is the law as it stands in October 2026. The plan to require at least 4 points in one daily living activity was dropped in 2025, and a government review of the assessment (the Timms review) is due to report in autumn 2026. Any change would need new rules first.

Does this work in Scotland or Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland's PIP uses the same activities and points. In Scotland, PIP has been replaced by Adult Disability Payment from Social Security Scotland, which also scores the same 12 activities with the same 8 and 12 point thresholds.

The words the descriptors use

Aid or appliance
Anything that helps you manage, from a perching stool or grab rail to a walking stick, a long-handled sponge or adapted cutlery. It counts if you would reasonably be expected to use one, even if you don't have it yet.
Prompting
Someone reminding, encouraging or explaining so you can do it.
Supervision
Someone staying with you the whole time to keep you safe.
Assistance
Someone physically helping with part of the task, not just reminding you.
Simple meal
A cooked one-course meal for one from fresh ingredients.
Therapeutic source
Feeding through a tube or pump, rather than eating by mouth.
